SNACC 2021 49th Annual Virtual Meeting
September 10 - 12, 2021

SNACC's 2021 49th Annual Meeting is Going Virtual: A Message from Meeting Chair, Alana Flexman, MD, FRCPC

Welcome to SNACC Annual Meeting Attendees

On behalf of the Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care and the Annual Meeting Planning committee, welcome to all attendees to the virtual SNACC 49th Annual Meeting. Welcome to all our long-standing members, returning attendees and new attendees from around the world! A warm welcome to the trainees attending the meeting, including medical and graduate students, residents, fellows, and post-docs – we are thrilled to have you join us.

Putting together another virtual meeting amidst the constantly changing pandemic, and professional challenges in the past year has not been easy. I’d like to sincerely thank our Meeting Planning Committee and management company Ruggles for their time, support, and flexibility. I would also like to thank our speakers, moderators, and organizers for working with us to make this an outstanding program, and our sponsors for supporting the meeting. These difficult times call for a team effort and it’s amazing to see how everyone has stepped up to the plate and come together.

Although there is no doubt that nothing can replace the in-person experience of the meeting, we are confident that this year’s virtual meeting will exceed your expectations and offer many added advantages for attendees that we hope you will enjoy. All our content will be available on-demand for months after the meeting, so you can watch at your convenience any sessions you might have missed. The virtual poster presentations were very well received last year, and some of you commented that the accessibility and communication were even better than in person. Finally, our reach is wider, and our meeting is more accessible to those who may not otherwise be able to travel, especially during the pandemic.

SNACC Annual Meeting, September 10-12 - Brought to you in virtual format

Our planning committee has been working very hard to create a program of excellent speakers on a range of neuroscience topics, with something for everyone. Our keynote speaker, Gelareh Zadeh, MD, PhD, FRCSC, FAANS, is a world-renowned translational and clinical researcher in neuro-oncology, and Professor and Chair of Neurosurgery at the University of Toronto. Dr. Zadeh will be speaking to us on the role of brain tumour metabolites and the blood brain barrier. On the first day of the conference, we have three simultaneous tracks of workshops for you to choose from: 1) An ICPNT workshop along with PBLDs; 2) Professional development and equity, diversity and inclusion workshops; and 3) Cutting-edge topics in the Neuroscience Symposium. The main program will include panels on the Neuroscience of Pain, Anesthesia for the Vulnerable Brain and a pro-con debate on the merits of same-day discharge neurosurgery that you won’t want to miss. Similar to last year, we will feature Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology Year in Review hosted by Editor-in-Chief Prof. Martin Smith, MBBS, FRCA, FFICM. Our scientific program will include abstracts from around the world, including our Best of Science session to feature the top-rated abstracts and award-winners. Lastly, I encourage all our attendees both new and returning to join for some social and networking events.

Looking Forward to Next Year

As we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, we will no longer take for granted the opportunities to be together, share knowledge in perioperative neuroscience, or enjoy food and drink with our friends and colleagues. The Annual Meeting is a major part of our SNACC community, and something I, along with you, look forward to every year. Next year will be a very special year in many ways. Not only will we be able to meet in-person (finally) we will also be celebrating SNACC's 50th Anniversary. Prepare yourselves for a huge celebration, because just like you, we can’t wait!

Enjoy the great content and science, connect with your colleagues and the SNACC community, and I look forward to seeing all of you soon virtually.
